Mae & The Midnight Fairground boast a collection of vibrant and shadowy circus-esque songs that tell vivid stories of wayward characters both human and animal. Collective brainchild of Mae Karthauser, song and music is coupled with a distinctive twist of humour and eccentrically woven anecdotes (on topics as wide as resident ladybirds, the violent homeless, and literature for 8-10 year olds). Whether alone, or surrounded by a troupe of anything up to ten musicians, dancers, acrobats and clowns, Mae Karthauser has audiences nestled playfully in the palm of her hand, as she strokes each one of them gently on the head, grinning like a badly behaved child in the chocolate aisle.

Mae currently resides in a caravan on a hill-top farm in Devon, overlooking the sea and moorland with her two cats and a herd of rather troublesome Friesian cattle. She can often be spotted performing on market squares with her red fairground organ, beguiling passers by… Born in 1985, to an eccentric German scientist father and a strongly Brethren mother, Mae was raised with her six siblings with a sturdy dose of music and The Bible. Singing and learning the violin and piano along with her brothers and sisters led to a strong drive for musical identity and a healthy pinch of competitiveness. She quickly developed a love for the piano, and spent her teens in dark practice rooms banging out songs with such sincerity that it brought her wide eyed peers to the door in their dozens.

After winning a county scholarship for singing lessons in her teens, Mae began an exploration across countless styles of vocal music. From handmade folk song to the elaborate and strange classical renaissance world; from the vocal music of Eastern Europe, Bulgaria, Africa, North India and Java and back to through to jazz, folk and more popular forms of repertoire. Whilst on an exchange in 2008 at the prestigious California Institute of the Arts she studied composition with the infamous surf-music pioneer Art Jarvinen and Bulgarian vocal technique with Kate Conklin. In 2009, Mae Karthauser was awarded a first class honours, concluding a four year study at the late Dartington College of Arts and from Dartington Festival, the Midnight Fairground was born: a multi-arts show weaving together song, dance, film and theatre.

Now touring solo, as a trio (and ever so often as multi-circus show), they've since taken south west England by storm. Since the first Dartington Festival performance in June 2009, Mae Karthauser has performed in California, France, Austria, Belgium and Italy and will be performing at Glastonbury 2013 after winning “Best Busker in the South West” last year at the competition hosted by Born Hectic. "Black Horses", the latest album was released in March 2012 and features, along with Mae, on “Little Red Bus” (Petit Bus Rouge) a circus documentary by Sebastien Montaz Rossett released this June 2013. Recording is under way for the new album set for winter 2013
